Emma Fisk and Paul Edis

Wed 12th Apr
7:30pm
The Witham 3 Horse Market Barnard Castle County Durham DL12 8LY - View on a Map

£12/10 admission

Emma Fisk (violin) and Paul Edis (piano) present a programme of classical, jazz and tango music from the years 1880-1950, taking their audience on a musical journey through this tumultuous but immensely creative period in musical history.

From Dvorak's romantic violin in 1880s Prague to the instantly recognisable tango, La Cumparsita in 1916 Uraguay; to Princeton University in the 1940s where Einstein performed music written for him by Martinu and London during the Blitz where Stephane Grappelli spent his war years ; this musical evening will give you a fascinating tour of people, places and music!

"...a musical tour (de force) across continents, centuries, and genres..."

Read about Emma's thoughts on the varied style of music and how she enjoys approaching these genres:

"I feel that music is often put into separate boxes and presented in a compartmentalized way in a somewhat artificial way. Lots of people like a wide range of music (I certainly do!) so why not present a programme that takes in a range of styles? There is also a lot of cross-fertilisation between musicians and musical styles. Lili Boulanger inspired Herbie Hancock; jazz and tango were played together for dancing in 1930s Paris; Gershwin wrote pop songs and opera, and Consuelo Velazquez who composed the Latin hit Besame Mucho, was a concert pianist"
